At school.. I hated maths. My brain didn’t understand numbers, algebra, fractions, percentages and because of that I would act out and end up not listening in class! (I know, naughty Hannah!) I scraped a C at GCSE with the support of a maths tutor and many arguments with my parents and felt extremely relieved that I didn’t have to go to maths classes ever again.
I was grateful to have scraped that C as most University’s only consider you with a grade C or above at GCSE in English and Maths, and I was able to attend York St John to study Theatre, which I loved.
As an adult, I have since realised that maths is actually really important. But not the maths that I was necessarily taught at school..
As an adult, I use numeracy every day. From when I am shopping looking at prices and hunting for that yellow sticker.. to looking at my heating dial and setting the temperature.. understanding my gas and electricity bills or looking at my bank balance and working out how much money I have left for the month.
Every day I am working with numbers and using those skills to navigate through life.
So why are we not taught how to understand bills or the cost of running a household in schools? Why are we not taught how to apply for a mortgage or how to understand your payslip?
I believe that if numeracy was taught in schools to support people with their every day lives, people would be better at budgeting and understanding their finances in every day life.
The Multiply programme is supporting adults to do just this. Check out the support on offer here or get in touch with Project Manager Emma Lyons on [email protected]
